Black Bean Burger

October 11, 2017

Black Bean BurgerA good burger is impossible to refuse because let’s face it, a juicy burger with toppings is the best thing ever! However, cutting down on the meat intake is a good idea and so we are always on the hunt for other delicious junk food-esque options, that still satisfy that craving, but are meatless. This week we have a delicious Black Bean Burger recipe for you. For me, it was like satisfying a craving for a good burger and falafel at once. You can pan fry it for a quick mid-week meal, or throw a patty on the barbecue for that tasty grilled flavour! Super healthy and your vegetarian friends will love you for it!

List of Ingredients for the Black Bean Burger (serves 4):

  • 1 can Black beans, 400 grams rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 red/yellow Bell pepper, diced
  • 1 small Red Onion
  • 3 tbsp chopped Cilantro
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/2 tbsp ground Cumin
  • 3/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Oats,
  • 1 small Avocado
  • 4 Hamburger buns of choice

Ingredients for Spicy Sauce:

  • 3 tbsp plain Yogurt
  • 1 tbsp Sriracha Sauce

How to Make the Black Bean Burgers:

Rinse the black beans and try to dry the beans well. In a bowl mash the black beans to a thick paste. Add diced bell pepper, onion, garlic and cilantro to a food processor. When this mixture is finely chopped, add cumin, salt, oats and the egg. Add the paste to the mashed beans and mix. All you need to do now is form four patties. When the mixture is too wet add some extra oats. Let the burger patties set in de fridge for 30 minutes.

In the meantime, prepare the spicy sauce by mixing the yoghurt and Sriracha sauce, slice the avocado and lightly toast the burger buns. Heat up a skillet, add some olive oil and fry the burgers 4 minutes each side. You can always dress the burger with some extra lettuce of grilled veggies, but this is such a delicious and healthy burger option just with the sauce and some avocado. Double the amount of ingredients and make extra patties to freeze for another easy dinner. Divide the patties using wax paper for easy portioning. Enjoy!
