De Soepwinkel

De Soepwinkel

This past November & December I was a regular customer at De Soepwinkel. As I was working in the city center of Groningen, it was an easy choice for a lunch spot. If I were to live near De Soepwinkel, I would be there at least 2 or 3 times a week to order one of their delicious soups. I mean, how could I not?!

De Soepwinkel (or “The Soup Store” in English) is a small lunchroom with only 4 types of soup on the menu. It was quite a brave move of owner Corry Diertens to open a lunchroom and serve just soup to its customers. You can order different beverages but that is pretty much it. However, it’s a huge success. Diertens’ passion really shines through her work and during lunchtime, the place is filled with customers ordering a soup (to-go). Most of them are students since De Soepwinkel is conveniently located near the University of Groningen.

De Soepwinkel serves 4 different kinds of soup every day and if you order one, you’ll get a delicious slice of bread on the side. You don’t have to worry if you can’t choose one, because you can also opt to try 3 of the 4 kinds of soup, which are then served in small cups that equal one big bowl. Even though I love most of the soups at the De Soepwinkel, I do have my favorites! One of my favorite soups is the pumpkin soup. I like to make pumpkin soup myself, but their version is even more delicious. Another favorite is the zucchini soup with blue cheese. I hadn’t thought of this combination before, but it’s great! With a little bit of cilantro on top and, all I can say is yum!

When you go in, there are 3 small tables and one large one for customers to take a seat. While you’re enjoying your meal, it’s lovely to just enjoy the view outside and check out the people passing by. Or you can just watch Diertens prepare the soups for tomorrow in her kitchen. It is such a cozy place that once I am done with my soup, I usually love to hang around with my friends and order coffee or tea. And, if I don’t have time at all or don’t feel like cooking, I usually have a soup to go. Due to work, I haven’t been at De Soepwinkel for some weeks now. But, all this writing about soup makes me want to go there right now!

If you pay Groningen a visit next time, De Soepwinkel should be on your list of places to have lunch! Even if it’s only to have a lovely chat with the owner and her friendly staff!
