But first coffee.. Isn’t this how most of us need to start our day? I personally don’t share that sentiment. I learned to drink coffee just a couple of years ago and I got to appreciate it over time. However, I don’t want to become too dependent on coffee, which is why I keep my caffeine doses in check. I usually drink one cup of coffee per day. And, since I drink it once a day, I do want to enjoy it as much as possible. During my journey of learning to drink coffee, I also got to know where to get the best caffeine shots in Groningen. So, naturally, we wanted to share them with you!
Simon Lévelt – Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat 2
Every coffee lover in Groningen knows that Simon Lévelt is the place to be. The coffee is one of the best out there. Also, as a chai lover, I can honestly say that Simon Levelt’s chai latte is delicious! The service is great, the staff is friendly and you can always take a free glass of fruit water at the counter. Even though Simon Lévelt is located in the city centre, it’s not in the most crowded area. You’re able to sit outside and enjoy a little of bit serenity. If you’re looking for a good cup of coffee to start your busy day with, then Simon Lévelt is your place.
P.S.! – Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat 24
You’ll love taking a seat at P.S.! and ordering something delicious. Anything actually, because it’s all so tasty! I really like the interior design of the cafe. The owners were inspired by the architecture in Barcelona when they designed this place. Compared to the other coffee spots on this list, P.S.! is more of a lunchroom. It’s also known for its delicious hot chocolate and pastries. The next time I’m there, I would love to try one of their breakfast options (croissants, scones or granola)!
Coffee United – Herestraat 7
Coffee United is an absolute favourite of mine! The cappuccino is great and the location is perfect. It’s located in the heart of the main shopping street. So, if you want to get a coffee to-go or sit at the window and look at the crowd that’s passing by, this is the place to be. Since it’s kinda small, I really like the cosy feeling of Coffee United. There are seats on the first floor too, where you will have both a great view of the Herestraat and the Vismarkt. What more can a person ask for?!
MasMas – Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat 65
I recently discovered MasMas and I love it. You can find lots of coffee places in Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat and people do tend to focus on those places located at the beginning of the street. However, if you walk a little further, you’ll find that MasMas offers great coffee. It’s small and has somewhat of a hipster feel to it, which kinda explains the younger crowd. Unfortunately, I discovered this amazing place a little bit too late. I saw on their Facebook page that they screened the last episodes of Games of Thrones (GoT)! Luckily, they organise movie/tv nights and creative courses on a regular basis. As for GoT, well there’s always next year…
Coffee Break – Gedempte Zuiderdiep 26
Coffee Break was one of those places where I would get my pre-class caffeine shots during college and it’s still one of favourite coffee places to go. Their cappuccino is straight up the best! They have a great selection of coffee and do try their home-made pastries! If you’re looking for a delicious slice of cheesecake, head to Coffee Break, because isn’t that all we need from time to time? To indulge ourselves with the ultimate combination of a classic cheesecake with a strong cup of coffee? It’s right at across the street from the main shopping street Herestraat, which makes it the perfect location to start/finish an afternoon of retail therapy.
