The summer is definitely the time to visit festivals. Be it music festivals or food festivals, the good vibe and being surrounded by people with the same interest, just make it such a feel good experience. For the past 25 years the city of Groningen has been the place where Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival takes place. Where it first started as a small-scale music festival, is has now expanded to a 10-day cultural fest centered in Noorderplantsoen (let’s label it Central Park of Groningen). Since Groningen is a university town pur sang, for many new (international) students this festival is their first welcome to their home for a semester!
With a wide range of performances all throughout the park and in the city center of Groningen (Noorderzon Down Town), Noorderzon is the perfect venue to experience new work of a range of international companies. From the more established names (Club Guy & Roni) to independent experimental artists, they all come to Groningen. And it’s so cool to see these artists are given a space to showcase their craft in this diverse cultural setting.
It’s just lovely to take a walk in the park, where you’ll come across people selling their artistic creations, various art exhibits, tents and outdoor stages. The charm of it is, that there is something for every art and culture loving person from the age of 4 til 104!
Since the festival takes place for ten days straight, it’s also the perfect after-school/work spot to chill and meet up with friends. There are a number of restaurants and bars to wine and dine. Most of the restaurants are based in Groningen, attending the festival every year to supply the visitors with their delicious food. Besides that, there are enough options for sweet (e.g. poffertjes, which are Dutch mini-pancakes!) and savory snacks to accompany that espresso or sweet cocktail!
When? Noorderzon takes place every last two weeks of august and this edition has already started Thursday 20th and you’ll be able to enjoy it until Sunday 30th of August!
