Our Top New On Netflix August 17

Is it August already? How did that happen?! This summer is passing by way to quickly, but that must mean we are enjoying it. The bright side of Dutch summer weather is that when it comes pouring down, we have a great excuse to binge watch new series and movies on Netflix. So here is our Top 5 ‘New on Netflix’ for August!

The Founder – Film, August 2nd, 2017

Attention to all fans of McDonald’s. When you have ever wondered how the most famous fast food restaurant came to be, The Founder is the film you need to watch on Netflix this month. The traveling sales man of milk shake mixers Ray Kroc notices a large demand of mixers in California, drives up there and discovers a popular fast-service restaurant owned by the brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald. Ray persuades the brothers to franchise the restaurant and the rest is history. Interesting movie and a great performance by Michael Keaton. Something to think about, next time you bite into that BigMac!

Sing – Film, August 3rd, 2017

When I saw the trailer of Sing, it literally made me laugh out loud. So this is really a one-to-see with or without kids! To save his theater koala Buster moon organizes a singing contest where animals from all around the city flock to the theater to compete. Starring the voices of Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey, Set MacFarlane and Reese Witherspoon this all star animation which includes more than 60 songs from famous artists, will not disappoint. It was so successful that a sequel has been announced in 2020! Can’t wait!

Icarus – Documentary, August 4th, 2017

If you think you have heard and seen it all concerning sports doping scandals, the documentary Icarus might still make you raise an eyebrow. The American documentary filmmaker Bryan Fogel was devastated when he found out about Lance Armstrong’s doping abuse, so he started to research the methods athletes undertake to defy the strict doping checks. Whilst looking for assistance in his research he comes across Grigory Rodchenkov, who turns out to be a key figure in the doping scandals of Russian athletes during the Olympics. He spills the beans about it all, whilst Russia is in full denial when German news channel ARD reveals the scandal during the Olympics of 2012 and 2014.

Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later – Film, August 4th, 2017

I was not familiar with the previous installments, but reading up about it, made me aware of the fact that there is quite a cult following! If you loved David Wain’s 2001 comedy Wet Hot American Summer and the prequel series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, watching Wet Hot American Summer: 10 years later is a must. Available on Netflix as from today, the crazy comedy takes you on a ride with 8 episodes. Perfect summer binging!

Marvel’s The Defenders – Season 1, August 18th, 2017

Finally, we’ll get to see favorite characters from Hell’s Kitchen together in two weeks in The Defenders. The miniseries consists of 8 eight episodes and, by looking at the trailer, it’s going to be epic! Although we aren’t big fans of “Iron Fist” (mainly because of the disappointing stand-alone series of the character), we’re happy that The Punisher will play a part on The Defenders. The Hand is once again wreaking havoc, have Sigourney Weaver as their leader and the Black Sky as their deadly weapon. Will Daredevil be able to convince Elektra she doesn’t have to kill for sport? Luckily, we don’t have to wait long to find out!
