We honestly don’t know – or don’t feel the urge to get acquainted with – anybody who doesn’t appreciate a little piece of this culinary treasure now and then. Chocolate makes your taste buds happy and consequently brings you in happy mode. Nonetheless, we often consider chocolate the sweet sinful stuff, but we want to point out why it’s so beneficial and totally necessary to get you through the day….no let us correct ourselves….get you through life….
- Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants. These include polyphenols, flavanols, catechins, among others, which protect your body from damage to cells and organs, improve blood flow in the arteries and can decrease high blood pressure
- Chocolate is a good source of magnesium, copper, iron and zinc
- The flavanols from cocoa can improve blood flow to the skin and protect it against sun-induced damage
- Chocolate contains alkaloids such as theobromine, phenethylamine and caffeine. These have physiological effects on the body and are linked to serotonin levels in our brain, hence the Happy Mode!
Tip: If you’re into cacao nibs and other raw chocolate products, you’re in the advanced chocolate class already. For anyone who would like to learn more, we ask you to go for the good stuff, which means chocolate with a higher percentage of chocolate( >70%). It might be a bit more expensive, but it has far more flavor, less sugar and you’ll notice that you need less to satisfy your cravings. And if you really want to do the good thing, read the labels on the wrapper and purchase fair-trade chocolate.
