November 5, 2014

If there is one type of fruit that reigns during autumn it must be the beautiful Pomegranate. This week’s Product Highlight is widely available from September until February and deliciously sweet, so take advantage of the premium state this fruit is in right now! Not only is the juice extremely healthy, the beautiful ruby red seeds are little, delicious gems which are often used in salads, but can also add extra bite and flavor to a smoothie or fruitwater.

  • The name pomegranate (punica granatum) derives from the Middle French “pomme garnete”, which literally means “seeded apple” and is an original native of Persia. In various cultures the fruit is perceived as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal life
  • A glass of pomegranate juice has more antioxidants than red wine, green tea, blueberries, and cranberries
  • A compound found only in pomegranates called punicalagin is shown to benefit the heart and blood vessels. It is known to lower cholesterol, but also lowers blood pressure
  • Pomegranates contain three types of antioxidant polyphenols, including tannins, anthocyanins, and ellagic acid, which provide your cells with the ability to protect themselves from free radicals

Tip: Select pomegranates by weight, not by color

Tip: An easy and quick way to remove the seeds, is to cut the fruit in half, hold one half over a plate/bowl and tap the fruit with a wooden spoon
